Can I apply for the student loan if I am under 18?

Unfortunately, you must be at least 18 years old to apply for a student loan. If you’re under 18, you may be eligible to apply in your second year of study when you reach 18.

In certain cases, parents or guardians can apply for a loan to cover the first year’s tuition fees only (excluding living expenses). The maximum loan amount will be limited to the first year’s tuition, and funds will be transferred directly to the overseas university to ensure they are used for educational purposes. Can I only apply to universities?

If you are 18 or older, you can apply for loans to attend both universities and foundation programs. This age requirement is based on regulatory guidelines.

Who is eligible to apply for the SocioBridge Overseas Studies Loan?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. You are eligible to apply for SocioBridge Overseas Studies Loan if you meet one of the following criteria:

You are a Hong Kong resident pursuing an Exchange Program, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or MBA/EMBA in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia or Hong Kong.

You are a Mainland Chinese student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Hong Kong.

You are a Mainland Chinese Bachelor’s Degree student studying in Hong Kong and seeking to pursue an Exchange Program, Master’s Degree, or MBA/EMBA in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, or Australia.

What is the interest rate for the Overseas Studies Loan?

Our interest rate is 14.98% for interest repayments during the study period. Interest repayments are required only during the study period and within 1 year after graduation.

Our rate is higher than traditional banks, as we do not have the right to take customer deposits as a cheap funding source. However, it is significantly lower than other licensed money lenders who generally charge 20%-48% for unsecured personal loan.

We encourage students to explore scholarships and low-cost bank loan options first. If you’re unable to secure a bank loan due to a lack of income proof, or if there’s still a gap in your education funding, we are here to help.

What is the repayment plan for SocioBridge Overseas Studies Loan?

During your studies and for up to one year after graduation, you only pay interest on the loan, allowing you to focus on your education. After this period,you begin repaying the principal and interest accruedmonthly over a 10-year term, designed to keep monthly payments manageable.

How can I lower the principal and interest repayments, or shorten the repayment period when I am employed after graduation?

After graduation and you are employed, once you have a few months of stable income, we recommend you try a low-interest loan from a bank, and refinancing our loan with a lower-interest bank loan. This can reduce your total principal and interest costs and potentially shorten the repayment period. There is no additional charge for early repayment.

How do I repay the loan while studying?

Interest repayments are required only while at school and within 1 year after graduation, students may contribute through part-time work, while parents or guardians can also provide support.

How much can I borrow for the SocioBridge Overseas Studies Loan?

The maximum loan amount depends on your individual circumstances and our loan approval system.

How do I apply for the SocioBridge Overseas Studies Loan?

You can apply for the SocioBridge Overseas Studies Loan online in five simple steps:

1.Complete the Online Application: Register and log in to our online application portal to fill out the loan application form.

2.Financial Journey Simulation: This process helps you determine an optimal education loan amount and understand its long-term financial implications, including potential ways to reduce interest expense after graduation. This step may be deferred if the requested loan amount is already optimal.

3.Upload Required Documents: Submit the necessary documents via the secure link provided in our follow-up email.

4.Receive a Conditional Offer: We’ll assess your application based on the submitted information. If approved, you’ll receive a conditional offer via email. If additional funding is needed, you may be placed on a waitlist and notified once funds are available.

5.Sign the Loan Agreement: After receiving your university acceptance letter, use our booking system to schedule an in-person visit to our office to sign the loan contract.

Will you check my personal credit record when I apply for a loan?

Yes, we typically reviews the applicant’s credit report as part of the loan application assessment. This helps us evaluate your eligibility.

Will my loan application be disclosed to my family or friends?

No, your loan application and personal information will remain strictly confidential in accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. We do not share your details with anyone, including family or friends, without your consent.

Is a personal guarantor required for the loan application?

No personal guarantor is required for loans up to HKD 500,000, which typically covers a full year of a Master’s degree. For loans exceeding HKD 500,000, a legal guardian must act as a guarantor.

What documents are required for the loan application?

After submitting your online application form, you will receive an email with a secure link to upload the required documents. These typically include proof of identity ( Hong Kong ID and passport), proof of university offer letter and academic records, household income proof and saving proof, etc. Additional documents may be required depending on your loan amount or circumstances.

How long does it take to get approval ?

Once you upload all required documents as part of your application, we will process your loan approval within 5 working days. You will receive the approval decision via email.

How can I withdraw the loan?

Once you sign the loan contract at our office, we will transfer the approved loan amount to your designated bank account. If the loan covers both tuition fees and living costs, the first year’s tuition fee will be paid directly to the university’s bank account as specified in your university acceptance letter. The remaining amount for living costs will be transferred to your designated bank account.

What kind of payment methods are available for repayments?

You can repay through bank direct debit or bank transfer.

What should I be aware of for monthly repayment dates if I’m repaying the loan by direct debit or bank transfer while outside Hong Kong in a different time zone?

When repaying your loan, please note that all repayment dates are based on Hong Kong Time (HKT). For direct debit, ensure sufficient funds are available in your bank account at least one working day before the monthly repayment date to avoid delays or missed payments. For bank transfers, initiate the payment early to account for time zone differences and processing times, ensuring it reaches us by the HKT repayment date.

How is interest calculated if a monthly repayment is overdue?

If a monthly repayment is overdue, interest will continue to be calculated on the outstanding principal and interest balance at the existing loan interest rate on a daily basis

Can I make extra amount repayment during the monthly repayment period?

Yes, our flexible repayment plan allows you to make extra repayments without early repayment penalties by providing 14 days’ notice via email. Early repayment should be made on the usual monthly payment date. Any additional payments will be applied directly to the principal, reducing the outstanding balance. Your subsequent monthly repayments will be recalculated based on the new principal, lowering your monthly payment amount.

Can I pay off my loan early? Are there any extra charges?

You can pay off your loan early or refinance it by providing 14 days’ notice via email. There are no penalties or handling charges for either option.
